On Tuesday June 22nd, 2010 the voters of Texas Senate District 22 will choose their next State Senator to replace retired Senator Kip Averitt in a runoff election between two Republicans, former SD-22 Texas State Senator David Sibley and 9/11 Pentagon survivor Lt. Col. (Ret.) Brian Birdwell, founder of Face the Fire ministries.
As you would expect the week before an election both campaigns and or their surrogates have laid out impressive endorsements and accusations against the other team.
The Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) released an attack campaign against Sibley highlighting his job as a lobbyist after he retired from the State Senate and Kip Averitt replaced him and as a donor to liberal democrat campaigns that faced viable Republican challengers. YCT distributed a one pager highlighting the above information at the Republican State Convention to the over 10,000 activists in attendance.
Sibley’s campaign unveiled the endorsement Baylor football coaching legend Grant Teaff through their “Save Our Seat” ad campaign on TV, radio and mail.
Sibley is playing on his years of experience in the Senate and being from Waco. This is important because one of the main issues in this election is what will happen to SD-22, CD-17 and the Central Texas area during redistricting. Sibley is saying that Waco and the surrounding cities and counties need an experienced Senator to help guide the region through redistricting and fight to keep the district together when the maps get redrawn during the 82nd legislative session in 2011.
Sibley also has the backing of prominent local and statewide Republicans including President George W. Bush.
