Policy Focus: Texas Agriculture

Governor Rick Perry is a fifth generation Texan and he grew up the son of tenant farmers in the small West Texas town of Paint Creek.  Perry earned a degree in Animal Science at Texas A&M where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets and a Yell Leader.

Prior to being elected Lieutenant Governor in 1998, he served two terms as Texas Commissioner of Agriculture and four terms in the Texas House of Representatives, representing the people of rural West Texas.

With this agriculture and rural background it is no wonder that last week Perry was proud to receive the endorsements of several agriculture-based organizations that want to see Texas agriculture remain at the forefront of the world market:

  • Texas Poultry Federation – “It is no coincidence that Texas leads the nation as the top producer in poultry, egg and dairy goods,“ said Texas Poultry Federation Executive Vice-President James Grimm. “Gov. Perry’s leadership and support to speak out on harmful ethanol mandates and the policies he has put in place in the past have played a vital role in maintaining our industry’s vigor and upholding the livelihood of ranchers and farmers across Texas. There’s no doubt Gov. Perry is the leader Texas needs to sustain our strong agriculture industry for years to come.”
  • BEEF-PAC of Texas Cattle Feeders Association – “The policies Gov. Perry has put in place throughout the years have ensured that our state remains a leader in food and fiber production,” said BEEF-PAC Chairman Monte Cluck. “Rick Perry is a good friend of the Texas cattle feeding industry and is the person Texans need to continue leading our state.”

“Texas continues to be the nation’s leading beef-producing state and home to a cattle feeding industry which Texas’, regional and national economies all depend upon,” said Gov. Perry. “I’m honored to have the support of BEEF-PAC and look forward to continue working with them to keep the agriculture industry in our great state among the strongest in the nation.”

  • Texas Wildlife Association – “The Texas Wildlife Association is pleased to support Gov. Perry,” said Tina Buford, president of TWA. “Our team is looking forward to working together on issues that affect our state and Texas’ private landowners, hunters and wildlife conservationists. We thank you, governor, for your efforts and generous public service.
