Tomorrow: Final Vote for Speaker of the Texas House

This afternoon the Republican Caucus of the Texas House voted 70-30 to return Rep. Joe Straus to Speakers Office for his second term over conservative challengers Ken Paxton and Warren Chisum.  Out of 101 Republicans 100 showed up and voted.

The caucus vote was not legally binding and was taken in a private members only meeting.  A formal vote will be taken on the House floor tomorrow afternoon after the Reps. are sworn in and the pomp and ceremony is over.  Of course in keeping with the House tradition there will most likely be a debate and vote to decided how to vote for the Speaker.  Paxton and his team will most likely call for a formal record vote that will record the individual members’ votes in the House Journal and thus public record for eternity to put public pressure on the members who vote for Straus.
