One hundred and seventy-five years ago today a group of 59 patriots gathered at Washington-on-the-Brazos and declared the Mexican state of Texas as an independent nation, the Republic of Texas.
As we go about our days today please think of those 59 patriots who passed along to the newly formed Republic of Texas a rugged spirit of individualism and independence that makes Texas and Texans special still to this day.
Here is to another 175 years of rugged individualism in Texas! As Colonel William Barrett Travis put in in his famous letter penned from the ramparts of the Alamo,
I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible and die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor and that of his country — Victory or Death.
