ESPN Goes Undercover to Investigate Illegal Cockfighting In Texas

On Tuesday, May 10th, 2011 at 6:00 PM on ESPN’s award-winning newsmagazine program E:60 reporter Tom Rinaldi goes undercover to investigate cockfighting in Texas.

Representative Wayne Christian hosted ESPN’s award winning news magazine program E:60 as they investigated illegal cockfighting in Texas.

ESPN interviewed Rep. Christian about why he filed HB 1043 that targets illegal cockfighting in Texas.  Rep. Christian explained that he filed HB 1043 on behalf of Nacogdoches County Attorney John Fleming who highlighted that local law enforcement officials are having trouble prosecuting suspects associated with cockfighting because of major loopholes in the existing laws.

HB 1043 will close those loopholes by making the following a crime, participating in the earnings of or operating a facility used for cockfighting, using or permitting another to use property for cockfighting, manufacturing, buying, selling, possessing cockfighting equipment, owning, possessing or training a cock with the intent that it be used for cockfighting and attending as a spectator an exhibition of cockfighting

County Attorney John Fleming stated, “Cockfighting is an extreme form of animal cruelty and goes hand in hand with other crimes. Law enforcement officials nationwide have documented the strong connection between cockfighting and the large-scale manufacture and distribution of illegal drugs as well as the connection with other illegal activities.  HB 1043 will give our local law enforcement officials the tools they need to effectively shut down cock fighting operations in Texas.”

The Texas Poultry Federation supports HB 1043 in an effort to help protect the $4 billion economic impact and over 18,000 jobs that the poultry industry directly and indirectly creates in the State of Texas. The Texas Poultry Federation states that, “It is vital we work hard to pass HB 1043, to prevent birds coming from Mexico bringing unsafe diseases and effecting the people and the poultry industry of East Texas.”

  2. I hope this bill passes. Cockfighting is ridiculous. By the way, this blog was linked to a cockfighting web site so expect some idiotic comments to be coming soon.

  3. All fowl or any animals coming from Mexico have to be quarantined for a lengthy time period to insure against diseases. In fact any country importing animals to the US has to undergo this stringent quarantine.Or you such a moron that you did not even look into this?or do you think everyone else is a moron that you can say anything and we believe it?Actually it is the Humane Society of the United States that introduces these laws against owning or using animals. Are you aware the HSUS has pending lawsuits against it for RICO act violations?RICO has to do with corruption and organized crime. This org. is going state to state buying perjured testimony and coercing state officials to pass laws against all animal use.Next will be rodeo-ing,hunting and fishing.Stop them while you can……..

  4. are you guys kidding me? 90% of your “investigative reporting” are outright lies! the “drugs” you showed are chicken medications, and there are no prostitution rings associated with cockfighting. why don’t you folks do a story that interviews both sides so that america gets a real picture of what’s really going on. show how PETA and the Humane Society raid farms that are suspected of cockfighting to save these animals. you’ll probably be asked to turn off your cameras when they pile roosters into barrels , puor gasoline on them and set them ablaze! now that’s what i call saving animals. yes, we may fight chickens, but the care they get is second to none. be truthful guys, don’t spead slander, just tell the truth about why you want the bill to pass… it’s because the HSUS and PETA have an agenda and billions of dollars to send your way.

  5. Fyi, no one from espn went undercover, all this was paid for by john goodwin and the hsus. Drugs are sold everywhere probably every street corner and bar across the united states, the war on drugs is far from being won, why is this being used against cockfighting? As far as any rooster or live animal coming across the border from mexico into the us is a total fabrication. I don’t see anyone attacking col. saunders and he kills millions of chickens daily. Instead of spending millions of $$$$$$ to line the pockets of politicians and buy air time on espn. Maybe the hsus should build shelters for unwanted stray animals or provide low cost vacinations and spray neuter for elderly and poor.

  6. i thing it was a huge waste of taxpayers money!it must have bin going on for yrs and no one noticed it,so how dangerous could it have in?i think endangering a humans life with these nazi gastapo stile raids over dam chickens is a joke!
picture a young boy asking his mommy were is my dad?and mommy says he is dead honey,he was killed in a raid to protect chickens!a chickens life is more important than a humans!what a friggen joke.ESPN this will be my last night ever watching your programs!

  7. I just finished watching your story on ESPN about cockfighting in Texas. It seems funny how you only show negative information and cruelty that is supposedly always and insistent with this sport(and it is a sport). It goes back many centuries to kings and royalty along with the common man. Anyhow, I feel you should always get both sides of the story. I mean really dig deep, not just show a guy let two roosters loose and say see I told ya that it wattint muy falt. I was born over thirty years ago and went to cockfights with my father before I was old enough to go to kindergarten. I still remember it like yesterday. This sport isn’t for everyone but you shouldn’t take it away just because some groups have alot of money to ban it and show negativity towards it. I work for the Federal Gov’t. and I use to attend these fights until my state banned some years back. Although if it weren’t illegal now I would be there in a minute.

  8. First of all, roosters don’t come from Mexico to Texas. It is a great business for game foul breeders selling roosters to Mexico. Second, you’ve got your thoughts twisted on cruelty. There is no difference letting two cocks fight both defending themselves than getting a riffle and shooting a poor deer eating corn off a deer feeder. Can’t these deer be killed in a humane manner. Or is this NOT CRUELTY! Fish caught on trot lines caught from their mouth with no defense just a few feet under water to be eaten and cut in half by larger fish. ISN’T THIS CRUELTY? Beautiful doves flying over our heads to be shot at with shot guns, shooting their wings off, landing on the ground still alive and eaten by ants and other predators or even falling into lakes and drowning with no defense and without wings. ISN’T THIS CRUELTY? Or were these doves meant to die this way? Flat flounder fish taking a simple nap on a low tide, to be stabbed by gigs or other metal devices. Many of them left wounded. ISN’T THIS CRUELTY? JUST LEGALIZE COCKFIGHTING AND COLLECT YOUR TAXES. By the way, how many times have you heard of killings, stabbings, or shootings at cockfights in Texas. You could probably count them in one hand. On the other hand, murders, stabbings, prostitution, and drug dealing, is happening on your local streets. WATCH YOUR LOCAL NEWS and LEAVE THE COUNTRY BOYS ALONE!

  9. Gamefowl and poultry, has always been raised, nationwide and handled under the agricultural venue, both crops harvested and procured as method for the family farm to earn income, the gamefowl industry has been responsible for hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars towards our nations GNP, as respected worldwide,,,our constitutional rights protect all agricultural economic situations except the gamefowl industry,,my question is how does the US Supreme court justify a special interest group being allowed to control a large group of tax paying citizens and prohibit that group from harvesting their income producing crop?

  12. Can’t believe they can even use the drug card when it comes to cockfighting and keep a straight face. I showed roosters for 20yrs and was never offered to buy drugs, yet go to your local bar and you get offered whatever you want. I would like to know how people that euthanize these animals in the name of animal cruelty can actually call themself an animal lover. Wish people like that would mind there own business. Long live the american gamecock.

  13. What ever happen to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness? And in regards to that mediocre reporter in order for any Investigation to have any validity it be based on more than one incident also It has to show both sides of the issue such as cockfighting creates revenues, this generates taxes that help the state and it also creates employment (which by the way we really need) this is just a few of the things that some folks may consider positive but I would not expect you to understand this. In this great Nation of ours any Idiot we a C average can be president I would imagine that a retard could be a reporter. I will close by saying quit hiding behind hidden agendas, what you liars and hypocrites are really trying to do is rob people of their personal freedom; It is my right to dispose of my personal property any which way I choose as long as I don’t harm any other human being. If you do not like cockfighting that is your prerogative I don’t like Idiots but I have to tolerate them, and a message to my countrymen stop being influence by this Associations that ask you to give donations to protect animals this are your hard earned dollars trust me their using them to fund campaigns to place people in government to look after their interest and not yours. Want to save an animal? Start by helping the poor the hungry the homeless the human race.
