Warning: 700 Texas Laws Take Effect Today

For most people September 1st means that Labor Day is getting close.  For politicos across the state however, it is the day that the majority of state laws take effect and are implemented and enforced statewide.

These laws that go into the effect range from serious ones with statewide effect, to local issues that only deal with one county and everything in between.

For a list of all 700 laws that take effect today visit the states legislative reference library website here.

My top two favorite laws that take effect today will do away with the lower night time speed limit and will allow the hunting of feral hogs from helicopters.

What is your favorite, or least favorite law that takes effect today?

Updated: The banning texting while driving bill (HB 242) was passed by the Texas House and Senate, and then vetoed by Governor Perry.  It would of taken effect today if not for the veto.

  1. I thought the no texting while driving ban got vetoed. Not that it will affect me because I don’t do that, but I would like to know.

  2. Lisa, thanks for pointing that out. The post has been updated with the following.

  4. I have a question, my step daughter was in a wreck with her mother this past tuesday because she was texting and driving and she now has a fractured skull and we aren’t sure the extent of her brain damage. So, since he vetoed the texting law she won’t suffer any consequences?

  5. Audra, there are already laws in place that cover distracted drivers that cause injury.
