Crockett Keller Defends CHL Radio Ad

Deep in the heart of the Texas Hill Country in Mason, Texas concealed handgun license instructor Crockett Keller’s radio ad promoting his CHL course has gone viral and received national attention.  Drudge Report recently picked up the story and Glenn Beck interviewed Crockett Keller.

Crockett Keller defended his CHL radio ad to Glenn Beck,

“That was somewhat of a tongue-in-cheek jab at some of my liberal neighbors,“ he explained regarding his stance against ”socialist liberals” and those who voted for Obama. “You understand, I put this ad on a small, local country music station that has less about a less than a 50 mile radius. You know, I was pretty much speaking to my neighbors. That’s somewhat expanded, I think.”

“I have approximately 10 hours to try to instill some form of knowledge into a person where they can make a life and death decision in split second. When you carry a weapon to defend yourself … you have a scant few seconds to decide whether not this warrants using deadly force or otherwise. … Now, they [liberal voters] had over a year and a half to vet who they voted for president. Now how can I take 10 hours and try to teach them a life and death decision in just a few seconds in just a few seconds when they screwed it up after a year and a half?”

You can listen to the whole radio interview with Glenn Beck and Crockett Keller here.  Listen to Crockett Keller’s radio ad here.

Crockett Keller is now being investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety.  To become a CHL instructor in Texas, you must be licensed by the DPS and be up to their standards to teach the class.  Previously the DPS stated that,

“The Department became aware of the statements in question yesterday and has begun an investigation into the matter. The Department will take appropriate administrative action based on the findings from the investigation.”

Stay tuned for more information on the DPS’s investigation of Crockett Keller.

Crockett Keller’s CHL Radio Ad

Deep in the heart of the Texas Hill Country in Mason, Texas concealed handgun license instructor Crockett Keller is in hot water over his recent radio ad promoting his CHL course.

The 45 second radio ad that played in the greater Mason County area said Crockett will “attempt to teach you all the necessary information you need to obtain your C.H.L..”   At the end of the ad Crockett added in this disclaimer,

“If you are a socialist liberal and or voted for the current campaigner in chief, please do not take this class. You have already proven that you cannot make a knowledgeable and prudent decision as under the law.  If you are a non-Christian Arab or Muslim, I will not teach you the class with no shame; I am Crockett Keller, thank you and God bless America.”

The Texas Department of Public Safety had this to say about Crockett’s ad,

“The Texas Department of Public Safety certifies individuals to teach coursework and provide training required to be taken by individuals seeking to qualify for a Texas concealed handgun license. Certified instructors are required to comply with all applicable state and federal statutes. Conduct by an instructor that denied service to individuals on the basis of race, ethnicity or religion would place that instructor’s certification by the Department at risk of suspension or revocation. The Department became aware of the statements in question yesterday and has begun an investigation into the matter. The Department will take appropriate administrative action based on the findings from the investigation.”

NRA and TSRA Endorse Governor Rick Perry

Yesterday the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) and Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA) PAC endorsed Governor Rick Perry for re-election in 2010.  This could not come at a more crucial time with less than 50 days till the election.

I urge you to actively support Governor Perry due to his steadfast support of the 2nd amendment.  Add your name to the endorsement list and recruit your friends and family to vote for Governor Perry by signing up as a Perry Home Headquarters today!  Sign up here, http://hq.rickperry.org/join/2d117.

Gov. Perry has supported and signed numerous pieces of legislation to strengthen Texans’ Second Amendment rights, which include:

• Creating reciprocal or unilateral agreements with 42 other states where Texans can legally carry a concealed weapon.

• Allowing Texans to defend themselves when threatened in their homes instead of retreating, known as the Castle Doctrine (SB 378, 2007)

• Extended the term of a CHL license from four to five years (HB 225, 2005)

• Cut license renewal fees in half for senior citizens (HB 1038, 2005)

• Preventing the confiscation of firearms and ammunition from law-abiding citizens during a future state of emergency or natural disaster (SB 112, 2007)

Bill White Mocks Over 400,000 Texans

We all now know that the Liberal Trial Lawyer Bill White Who Wants to Take Your Guns is no fan of the 2nd amendment, but now he has gone a step further and is publicly mocking on twitter the over 400,000 Texans who have a Concealed Handgun License (CHL) and carry a handgun during their daily lives, yes even when they are working out.

Here is Bill White’s recent tweet.

Bill White is obviously poking fun at Governor Rick Perry for exercising his second amendment rights by legally obtaining a CHL and carrying a Ruger .380 on a daily basis, even when he goes for a jog.  The only problem is that he is also mocking over 400,000 other Texans who have made the very serious choice to legally obtain a CHL and carry a concealed weapon.  This just goes to show that Liberal Bill is not in touch with Texans and Texas values.  Liberal Bill is not fit to be the Governor of Texas.

Lobbyist Getting CHLs to Gain Access to the Capitol

Following the new airport style security measures at the Texas Capitol the lobbyist and other Capitol insiders were up in arms about how the potentially long security lines would restrict their access to the Capitol and hinder their jobs.  But lobbyists being who they are have found a loophole.

At entrances to the Capitol there are breeze through lines where CHL holders can show their CHL license and quickly gain entrance to the building.  Lobbyist, journalist and other insiders have been taking the courses with no intention of carrying in the Capitol, they just want to be able to gain access quickly.

A reader brings up a great question, will the lobbyist write off the expense of the CHL course and DPS fees as a “business expense?”  My guess is yes, I wonder what clients will be billed for that!

I would have to agree with my CHL instructor Mike Cox of www.driftwoodchl.com who says in the Austin American-Statesman that it is a good thing that Capitol insiders are learning about their second amendments rights and what goes into obtaining a CHL.

Mike Cox, a state-certified instructor who taught Miller’s class, said he has seen a recent increase in students — many of whom he suspects are lobbyists. “To an obligatory question we ask — what’s your motive for being here — to break the ice and see if there’s any nut cases enrolled, a number say they just want the CHL to get in the express lane,” he said. “That’s all right. We’re educating a lot of people on the proper use of weapons and their Second Amendment rights, and that’s good.”

Here is the Austin American-Statesman article.

Bill Miller already has his ticket to the express lane. Brad Shields is getting one.

Both veteran lobbyists are among dozens, perhaps hundreds, of the nearly 1,500 registered lobbyists who are scrambling to get state licenses to allow them to carry concealed handguns. Most don’t want to pack a pistol, though they legally could, but want the license to get into the State Capitol quickly during the legislative session that starts in January.

“Because of a scare with one crazy guy with a gun, the only way to get quick access to the Capitol will be to carry a gun,” said Shields, who has been a lobbyist for nearly three decades. He represents a variety of business clients, along with associations representing everything from yoga practitioners to dental hygienists to audiologists. “Now, that makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it?”

Miller, a longtime lobbyist, completed his licensing class and exam last week. “It’s a big deal. Most everybody I’ve talked to said they’re just doing it to get in the express lane,” said Miller, who represents dozens of clients, from big corporations to cities to the Houston Rockets to newspaper publishers and broadcasters.

“For 140 bucks, plus a $2 handling fee, it’s worth it.”

That’s how much the licensing fee costs. The cost of classes ranges from about $70 to more than $100.

Liberals Howling at the Moon Over the Ruger .380 True Texan Coyote Special.

The blogosphere is a buzz about Ruger releasing a special Ruger .380, the “True Texan Coyote Special.” The right, hunting enthusiasts and lovers of the 2nd amendment all seem very pleased about the True Texan Coyote Special and the event it is commemorating.

The left however is up in arms about the whole thing.  Texas Monthly’s “In the Pink” blog by Eileen Smith leads the coyote pack that is howling at the moon over this.  Eileen is usually pretty funny when taken in the right context but goes over the top with this rant.

You know you’ve arrived when someone names a gun after you because you made up a story about how you battled with a puppy-mauling coyote while jogging, broke its neck with your bare hands, and then shot it dead as it begged for mercy in ancient coyote-talk. This is total baloney, if baloney is bull*shit. I have begged the writers here to conduct a full investigation into Rick Perry’s coyote story—why didn’t he talk about this back in February? Why wasn’t his security detail with him? Who carries a gun while running? In the suburbs? What did he do with the carcass?—but so far no one has expressed any interest. Have it your way. I’m going to break this wide open as soon as I can get the governor’s office to return my phone calls.

The statement that stands out the most to me is “Who carries a gun while running?”  The liberal left does not respect or understand the majority of Texans who participate in their God given 2nd amendment rights through owning guns, hunting, sport shooting and legally carrying a concealed weapon.  Carrying a gun while running would apply to those that legally carry a concealed weapon through obtaining a Concealed Handgun License also known as a CHL which the Governor has.

Why would someone legally carry a gun while running?  For the same reason they legally carry a gun during all aspects of their daily lives.  They take their and their family’s security and safety seriously want to be prepared if a life or death situation arises.

Over 400,000 Texans have made this choice and have obtained CHLs.  During the 2008 fiscal year 73,090 Texans obtained a CHL.  Of those 73,090 Texans who obtained a CHL 1,851 or 2.53% of the statewide total reside in Travis County.  Note that this is higher than conservative and more rural Williamson County’s 2008 fiscal year total of 1,252 or 1.71% where you would expect a more positive view of guns and CHLs.

Harris County leads the state with 10,959 CHLs issued to Harris County residents in the 2008 fiscal year, followed by Tarrant County with 5,654 and Dallas County comes in a close third place with 5,521.
